Somerset County

Somerset County was established in 1809 from part of Kennebec County and took its name from Somerset in England. Skowhegan serves as the county seat within a jurisdiction extending across a substantial portion of inland Maine. Towns such as Madison, Bingham, and Jackman illustrate the reach of that community network. The county’s broad geography means its administrative identity and its individual town histories are related but separate parts of the regional story.

Skowhegan offers a southern county center, while U.S. 201 provides a route north through a sequence of communities toward the international border. Madison, Bingham, and Jackman give that journey local reference points. Other towns, including Pittsfield and Fairfield, add further connections within the county. Planning around a few named communities is more useful than assuming the whole area can be explored from one stop, especially when a trip extends toward its northern reaches. The L.C. Bates Museum in Hinckley offers a natural-history collection with the atmosphere of an early twentieth-century museum. Its displays invite close looking at specimens and the ways people have collected and interpreted the natural world. Outdoor trails provide another part of the setting. Confirm indoor visiting arrangements separately from trail access, particularly if you are planning a trip specifically to see the museum's collections. Moxie Falls offers a forest walk leading to one of Maine's notable waterfalls, near The Forks in Moxie Gore. The trail listing describes an approximately two-mile round trip and different surfaces along the route. Its popularity can make parking a constraint at busy times. Review the trail description and conditions before visiting, and choose another destination if the parking area is full rather than obstructing access. Hinckley and the Moxie Falls area lie in different parts of Somerset County. Plan travel deliberately and avoid treating a museum visit and waterfall walk as neighbouring stops.
