Cumberland County

Cumberland County was established in 1760 from part of York County, before Maine became a state. Its name honors William, Duke of Cumberland. Portland later developed as an important port and remains the county seat, connecting the county’s civic identity with its coastal setting. Inland, Sebago Lake and the Presumpscot River reveal another side of the same geography. The relationship between port, river, and lake is central to understanding this varied part of southern Maine.

A county itinerary can move between Portland’s city setting, Casco Bay communities, and inland towns near Sebago Lake. Brunswick, Freeport, Gorham, and Windham offer additional reference points beyond the county seat. Coastal islands and inland foothills create very different settings within the same county. Allowing time for those differences gives a fuller impression of local life than staying within the waterfront district or assuming every community shares the same coastal character. Portland Head Light is part of the wider landscape of Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. Give yourself time to look beyond the lighthouse: the site also introduces coastal defenses, the Goddard Mansion ruins and Ship Cove. The museum and park are related but have different visiting arrangements. Check the official information for museum opening dates and access before building an itinerary around an indoor visit. Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park brings together forest, an estuary and rocky Casco Bay shoreline. Its trails offer a way to slow down and notice the transitions between these habitats. The park's nature interpretation includes osprey associated with nearby Googins Island, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Use the trail map to choose a walk that suits your group and check scheduled nature programs before visiting. The Cape Elizabeth shoreline and Freeport woods offer distinct coastal experiences. Choose one as the focus of a day and allow travel time if combining it with Portland.
