York County

York County traces its government to 1636. Alfred is its county seat, and the courthouse’s history offers a tangible connection to that long civic record. A fire destroyed the central portion of the courthouse in 1933, but most county records survived. Today, exploring the region means looking beyond a single landmark: communities preserve different chapters of southern Maine’s history.

For a quieter outdoor stop, Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park in South Berwick has forest paths beside the Salmon Falls River. The connected trail system allows shorter loops as well as a longer walk. Mount Agamenticus offers another way to explore inland landscapes: choose a route from the conservation program’s trail information and check permitted activities before setting out. Coastal and inland stops reward different kinds of visits, so leave enough time between destinations.
